On Friday, April 22 Arkansas’ first Ben Carson Reading Room was opened at L.F. Henderson Intermediate. The reading room project is an initiative of the Carson Scholars Fund designed to promote daily, independent reading. The festivities began with an all-school assembly. L.F. Henderson Intermediate students celebrated the opening of the room by performing a skit and singing Shooting Star by Owl City. During the ceremony Jason Sanders, Ashdown School Superintendent, and Bob Grygotis, Domtar Ashdown Mill Manager, addressed the students and staff. Afterwards, guests were escorted to the school library for the unveiling of the reading room which is located in the library and holds a collection of over 500 books that are considered to be of "high-interest" to the students. The Ben Carson Reading Room at L.F. Henderson Intermediate is the first reading room to be established in Arkansas and the first of ten that are planned to open through the Domtar partnership.
