Texas Governor Greg Abbott is ordering a review of how public school districts spend taxpayer money.
Abbott has directed the state comptroller to examine the budgets of at least four school districts, although the governor’s office has not identified which districts will be reviewed.
Texas is spending about $105 billion on public education. Abbott says the review will determine whether those taxpayer dollars are being used lawfully and for their intended purposes.
The governor also wants to know whether the money is directly supporting teachers and students in the classroom.
A final report has been requested by December 31st, ahead of the next Texas legislative session in January.
