Critical Blood Shortage Reported Across Ark-La-Tex

A national blood crisis has been declared, and local blood centers are asking for immediate help.

LifeShare Blood Center in Texarkana says blood supplies have dropped to less than a one-day inventory, with Type O blood in the greatest demand. Officials warn that a single major trauma could quickly deplete the available supply needed by area hospitals.

LifeShare says summer travel and fewer donations have contributed to the shortage, while increased accidents have driven up the need for blood. The center needs to collect about 450 units each day to keep up with hospital demand.

To encourage donations, Type O donors will receive a $25 gift card when they donate at any LifeShare donation center or mobile blood drive through Aug. 13.
