DHS Funding Lapses, TSA Officers Working Without Pay at Texarkana Airport

Funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has expired, triggering a partial federal government shutdown that could disrupt air travel nationwide.

Funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has expired, triggering a partial federal government shutdown that could disrupt air travel nationwide.

Nearly 61,000 Transportation Security Administration officers are now working without pay, including about a dozen at Texarkana Regional Airport.

Airport Director Paul Mehrlich said while federal employees are typically given back pay after shutdowns, the delay can create financial strain.

“It is normal for them to be given back pay for the time that they were working, but that never happens immediately,” Mehrlich said. “Depending on where they are in their paycheck cycle, that can cause further impact for up to an additional two weeks.”

If necessary, the airport will again partner with Harvest Regional Food Bank to assist affected workers. Executive Director Camille Wrinkle said the organization is prepared to provide fresh and shelf-stable food to families in need.

The shutdown currently affects agencies including the TSA, FEMA, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Secret Service, ICE, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Mehrlich warned that prolonged shutdowns can lead to staffing shortages at larger airports as more employees call in sick, potentially impacting travel across the country. However, he said no significant disruptions have been reported so far in Texarkana.

Congress is scheduled to remain in recess until February 23.
