A Pennsylvania woman visiting Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park discovered a 3.09-carat white diamond during a trip she said brought comfort after recent family losses.
Keshia Smith found the diamond April 22 while digging in the park’s search area near a marker honoring Arkansas’ first diamond discovery. Park staff later confirmed the stone at the Diamond Discovery Center.
Smith said she had planned the trip for more than a year and made the journey after losing her son in October and her father just weeks ago. She named the gem the Za’Novia Liberty Diamond in honor of her grandchildren and America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
Park officials say the diamond is the second-largest registered at the park this year.
