Texarkana Regional Airport will temporarily close both of its runways for 15 days beginning around Sept. 23 as part of a major runway improvement project.

During the closure, all commercial and general aviation flights will be suspended, although helicopters will still be able to operate. Airport officials say American Airlines has known about the planned shutdown for two years and will not sell tickets for Texarkana flights during that time.

The project will strengthen and extend the main runway to support larger aircraft and future maintenance operations expected to bring up to 160 new jobs to the region.
