Texarkana has been named in the American Lung Association’s annual “State of the Air” report for the first time. The report, which tracks air pollution levels across the country, focuses on unhealthy levels of ozone (smog) and year-round particle pollution, also known as soot.
Based on data from 2021 to 2023, Texarkana joins Brownsville, Texas, and Kalamazoo, Michigan, as new additions to the list of U.S. cities with notable levels of particle pollution.
Bakersfield-Delano, California, topped the list as the worst city in the nation for year-round soot levels. The report has been published annually for 26 years and uses air quality monitoring data to assess the health risks linked to pollution.
